Wow, this is pretty cool - My album is #9 on the National Jazz Charts! As I look out my kitchen window and contemplate these next couple of months, all I can say is that I am excited for it all. Every month I work for two amazing individuals named Julian and Natalie to present a night of poetry and live music. I've been working for them since August and it warms my heart to know that I'm "part of the True Lounge fam". The story about the two is that they moved to Calgary from New York years ago (Natalie is originally from Calgary) and started a poetry-reading night out of their living room because of a desire to connect with a community and find those who share their love for spoken word.
It has always been a monthly gathering. Some nights the house would be packed with poets and friends. Other nights there would only be 3 visitors. But consistency and time has brought the event to new heights. Today, the True Lounge event is housed in one of Calgary's most beautiful spaces, the Gerry Thomas Art Gallery, and it brings together a culturally diverse group of Calgarians.
Friday, May 4th is when this open mic night will be. As always, I'll be with my band. This time around I have two special guests joining me on stage, bassist Lisa Jacobs and avant-garde saxophonist Aaron Leaney. These members will bring a different musical vibe to the fore, one that I welcome 100%. This particular night will also include a blood donor registry drive. I've been told some surprising statistics about the very low percentages of registered donors who represent minority races in the registry. Our event aims to raise awareness of this high demand and hopefully motivate people to donate blood.
I'm very proud to be a part of something so rich in art, culture and community. Its an experience to watch young and seasoned poets sharing their thoughts and stories through a beautiful art form and witness the love and support that is given back to them. And to be surrounded by large pieces of art greatly enhances the experience.
